For six years he received one to one training in surgery, being assisted in his practice at all of his surgical procedures by one of the UK’s leading oral surgeons.

He was a part-time Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Eastman Dental Institute in London until 1984 and then a part-time Research Fellow at the Institute. Since 1977 he has run continuing education courses in his practice for groups of up to 25 dentists meeting one day per month for a year (these were the first courses in the UK with this format). Sessions meeting one day every three months were then offered to dentists who had completed the one year course and currently there are 90 dentists on continuing education courses with Michael in his practice. He also set up a course for dental hygienists meeting for a half a day every three months.

He is a member of many professional societies including the American Academies of Restorative Dentistry and Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics. He has lectured widely both nationally and internationally and is the author of many publications including a 10-part series on Occlusion and Restorative Dentistry published in the British Dental Journal in 1982 and subsequently produced as a BDJ handbook. He has written a text “Failure in the Restored Dentition : Management and Treatment”, published in English, Italian , German and Russian versions by Quintessence Publishing Company in February 1995. In the last year besides lecturing in the UK he has lectured in America (to the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, The American Equilibration Society and a 2 day course to a group from The University of Michigan), Russia and Italy. He has devoted a substantial part of his professional life to teaching and it is his view that being a practicing clinician enhances what he has to offer to the practitioner. He firmly contends that clinical practice should be based as far as possible on a sound analysis of the literature. For further details see www.michaelwise.co.uk
