Dr. Garfunkel received his DMD in 1963 and, from 1964 to 1966, held a residency in anesthesiology at the School of Dental Medicine, Israel.
He completed his postgraduate work in oral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine in 1975 ; internship in anesthesiology (1966-1969) and and was a fellow in immunology there from 1972 to 1975.
He has held a number of other academic appointments with various prestigious institutions, from 1977 to 2000. He was chairman of the Oral Medicine Department, Hadassah, Jerusalem, Israel from 1980 to 2003 and Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine 1986-1990.
He has been awarded honorary membership and fellowships, including Doctor Honoris Causa, Nippon University, Japan (2003) and Carol Davilla University, Romania.
He is a honorary member of the American Dental Association, Israeli Dental Association and Burma Dental Association. He serves on the editorial boards of eleven international publications. He has published over one hundred original papers and book chapters.
He has been an invited lecturer in Israel, USA, France, Switzerland, Japan, Russia, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Romania, Philippines, Burma, Morocco, Singapore, Tunisia.
